Spotted Knapweed “Centaurea biebersteinii” Sunflower Family (Asteraceae).  Biennial or perennial, plant 2-4′ tall, basal leaves segmented and upper leaves entire, flowers pink to purple or occasionally white.  Blooms in summer along roadways and widespread in Or & Wa.  This is an invasive weed but the Yellow-faced Bumble Bees enjoy them anyway.

Pineapple Weed “Matricaria discoidea” Aster Family (Asteraceae).  Annual, plant 2-10″ tall, yellow green disk flowers and no ray flowers.  Blooms in summer in moist disturbed soil throughout Or. & Wa.  Plant has a strong pineapple smell when crushed.  This is a “weedy” plant that is native to North America and Europe.

Devil’s Club “Oplopanax horridus” Ginsing Family (Araliaceae).  Perennial shrub 3-10′ tall, large lobed leaves up to 14″ across, leaves and stems with stiff spines, flowers greenish-white spikes up to 10″ long, petals small with prominent stamens, berries scarlet.  Blooms in late spring – early summer in the moist woods of Western Or. & Wa.
