Fairy Lantern “Prosartes smithii”. Lily Family (Liliacea). Perennial, plant 1-3 ft tall, flowers 0.5-1″ creamy white bells, berries yellow to orange, blooms in early summer in moist woods from the Cascades to the coast in Or. & Wa.

Checker Lily “Fritillaria affinis” Lily Family (Liliaceae). Perennial, scaly bulb, plant up to 3′ tall, leaves lance shaped with pointed tips, bell shaped flowers yellow and checked with brown, red and purple. Blooms mid-spring in Western Or. & Wa. (This photo might be of a cross between “Fritillaria affinis” & “Fritillaria glauca”?)

Licorice Fern “Polypodium glycyrrhiza”,  Polypody Family (Polypodiaceae)  Perennial, plant 6-24″ tall, leaves pinnate (like a feather) and the leaflets are arranged alternately, creeping rhizome with a licorice taste.  Common on rocks, logs and trees in Western Or. & Wa. and more noticeable during the rainy season.

Mountain Huckleberry “Vaccinium membranaceum” Heath Family (Ericaceae). Perennial, Plant 2-4′ tall, leaves with very little stem, finely toothed and have pointed tips. Flowers are  solitary, pinkish and urn shaped.  Berries purple, reddish black or occasionally red.  Blooms May to July in Westside forests and meadows at mid to high altitudes and in the Blue Mts of Eastern Or. & Wa.

Nobel Fir “Abies procera”

Noble Fir “Abies procera” Pine Family (Pinaceae).  Tree up to 5′ in diameter and 150′ tall.  This tree was a blow down next to the trail and that made for a much easier picture. Grows from 2,000 to 5,000′ in Or. & Wa. Cascade Mts. and Coast Range in N.W. Or.  True firs have cones that stick straight up like candles.

Shasta Clover “Trifolium productum”  Pea Family (Fabaceae).  Perennial, plant 6-18″ tall, leaves saw toothed with pointed tips, flowers white with purple tips in head approx 1″ in diam.  Blooms in moist rocky soils all summer in Southern Or.
