Three-leaf Lewisia “Lewisia triphylla” Purslane Family (Portulacaceae) Perennial, plant 1-4″ tall, leaves fleshy & 2.5″ long, flowers small & white with pink pencil lines, early summer in damp meadows in Cascades of Or. & Wa. & the Blue Mtns,  This tiny jewell is the only Lewisia without a rosette of leaves.

Clouded Sulfur Butterfly “Colias philodice” nectaring on Spreading Dogbane “Apocynum androsaemifolium” Dogbane Family (Apocynaceae), Perennial, plant 8-24″ tall, flowers 1/4″ bell shaped pink to white, dry shaded areas, widespread other than coastal areas.  Dogbane tends to be weedy, but butterflies find it very attractive.  Photo:  Near Stein’s Pillar N.E. of Prineville, Or.  7/10/07

Big-Pod Mariposa Lily – “Calochortus eurycarpus” grows in Eastern Oregon.  Flowers 2″ across and they bloom in early summer. The color has always reminded me of spumoni ice cream. The bulbs are edible but the flowers are much too pretty to be tempting.

Green Banded Mariposa Lily “Calochortus macrocarpus” Lily Family (Liliaceae). Perennial, Scaly bulb, 8-18″ tall, large showy flowers with a green band on the underside of the petals. Single grass-like leaf that does not persist.  Dry open prairie in Eastern Or. & Wa.
