Fairy-slipper “Calypso bulbosa” Orchid Family (Orchididaceae) Perennial, bulbous corm with a single basal leaf, plant 3-7″ tall. Petals usually reddish purple fading with age and fragrant but definitely not for picking. Fringe Pod “Thysanocarpus curvipes”  Mustard Family (Brassicaceae).  Annual, plant 6-18″ tall with small white flowers, the seed pods are 1/3″ in diameter with radiating spokes,  found in wet meadows in the spring throughout Or. & Wa. but more common in the Gorge and the Siskiyous.  The sunlight illuminating these seed pods was sufficient encouragement to lie down in the wet grass to take a picture.  Photo:  Upper Table Rock near Medford,Or.  4/13/2005  © Marvin Kellar

Midget Phlox “Phlox gracilis” Phlox family (Polemoniaceae)  Annual, plant 2-8″ tall, leaves hairy and 0.5 to 1.0″ long, flower pink to white and approx. 1/8″ in diameter.  Blooms spring and summer throughout OR & WA.  This flower is small and you may have to look twice to see it.  Photo:  Upper Table Rock near Medford, Or 3/21/2009 © Marvin Kellar
