  • Cascade Dowingia “Dowingia yina” Bluebell Family (Campanulaceae).   Annual, Plant growing in a mass and 1-4″ tall, flowers are 1/3″ across, blue with yellow spots surrounded by white patches. Big Indian Gorge

Big Indian Gorge on the south side of Steens Mt.  The canyon is approximately 2,000 feet deep and the ridge at he top has an elevation of 9,000 feet.  It is a tempting flower walk and it is considered to be “moderately strenuous” but I am not likely to try it. I stopped to take a picture of some blue elderberries “Sambucus nigra subsp. cerulea” and when I got home, I discovered a Cedar Waxwing in my picture. I suspect that he was watching over the berries to make sure they didn’t go to waste.  Photo:  Near Rainier, OR 9/12/2006

Burrowing Owl “Athene cunicularia” Length 9″, wing span 21″ and weight 5 oz. Mom and pop and mom and pop with 7 chicks.
